The Truth About “Alignment” and Your Spine

By Dr. Stephanie Shaw, DC

Frustrated skeleton

One of the most common things I see on new patient intake

forms is a complaint that makes me roll my eyes just a little:

This spinal segment is out – please put it back in

or

I need an alignment adjustment”.

Almost every time, these patients have been seeing other chiropractors for months or even years, and they’ve been told their spine is “out of alignment”. They come in with a list of specific vertebrae or areas that need adjustments – as if these areas need to be held in a very specific position to function properly.

But here’s the truth: Your body is meant to MOVE! People don’t go about their lives with bones magically shifting in or out of place. The spine is remarkably resilient, and what really causes pain, stiffness, and discomfort isn’t some invisible misalignment – it's limited movement, ineffective or dysfunctional patterns, or compensations in other parts of the body.

Why Function Matters More Than Alignment

Why Chasing “Alignment” Doesn’t Solve the Problem

When care focuses solely on “putting a vertebra back in”, we are missing the bigger picture. Often, the same areas keep flaring up again and again. The real question should be:

Why is this area repeatedly an issue?

Some of the common underlying factors include:

  • Neurological issues – How the nervous system is signaling the muscles to fire

  • Muscular dysfunction – imbalances, overactivity, or weakness in the surrounding muscles

  • Repetitive movement patterns – work, exercise, or habits that overload certain joints

  • Sedentary behaviour – Spending long periods in the same position, even “good posture”, can create stiffness and stress over time

If we ignore these root causes and only adjust the same segments repeatedly, it’s like bailing water out of a leaking boat without fixing the hole. The problem will keep coming back – even if it feels better temporarily.

It’s important to note that, in some cases, pain or stiffness may also be influenced by underlying conditions such as osteoarthritis, inflammatory conditions, or other medical concerns. This is why every patient requires a thorough, individualized assessment – what works for one person may not be appropriate for another. By understanding the unique factors contributing to your discomfort, we can create a personalized plan that addresses the root causes, not just the symptoms.

Mobility and Function Are the Real Goals

Instead of obsessing over “alignment”, a functional approach looks at:

  • Mobility: Can your joints move freely through their full range of motion?

  • Function: Are your muscles, joints, and nervous system working efficiently together to support daily activities or sports?

Restricted, hypermobility, or poor function can lead to:

  • Pain in the back, neck, or any joints

  • Reduced performance in exercise or sports

  • Compensatory strain elsewhere in the body

  • Greater risk of future injury

Chiropractic care that focuses on function doesn’t just adjust a joint – it restores movement, corrects imbalances, and helps your body work better overall.

What Functional-Focused Chiropractic Care Looks Like:

When your care is mobility- and function-focused, a visit may include:

  • Assessment of movement patterns rather than just posture

  • Identification of stiff or overactive joints and muscles

  • Manual therapy to restore joint and muscle function, and reduce pain

  • Exercises and education to improve strength, coordination, and daily function

  • Focus on long-term improvement, not just a one-time “snap back"

The results? Better joint mobility, improved muscle function, and reduced pain – and less reliance on repeated adjustments for the same spot.

Takeaway

If you’ve been told you’re “out of alignment” take a step back and ask:

  • Can I move freely without pain?

  • Are my muscles and joints working efficiently together?

  • Am I able to do my daily activities comfortably?

That’s the real goal of chiropractic care: helping your body move better, function better, and feel better – not chasing the illusion of perfect alignment.

If you’re ready to ask "Why Function Matters More Than Alignment" and to focus on how to achieve a better, long term functioning body, over a temporary and ultimately ineffectual alignment, schedule an assessment.
